Two-thirds of couples (68%) say they’d love a tool that could decode their partner’s cryptic comments
In response, experts at relationship app Paired have harnessed state-of-the-art AI technology to create the "Couplish Translator" — a playful but scarily accurate tool that deciphers what your partner really means, even when they don’t say it
NEW YORK – Aug 2025 – Ever wished your partner came with subtitles? Now they do. The new Couplish Translator is an AI-powered tool that decodes the unspoken language of relationships, revealing the real meaning behind everyday phrases like “It’s fine,” “Do whatever you want,” and “We’ll see.”
Developed by relationship app Paired using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and informed by data from thousands of couples, the tool was inspired by a recent survey of over 1,500 people, which found that 87% of couples admit they sometimes say one thing but mean another. This phenomenon — dubbed Couplish — is a universal shorthand made up of shared cues, loaded pauses, and seemingly harmless phrases that often carry a deeper meaning.
While Couplish can signal intimacy, familiarity, and humour, it’s also a source of miscommunication. More than half (53%) have used “I’m fine” to mean the opposite in the past three months alone — clear proof that this hidden language is alive and well.
The Couplish Translator uses advanced natural language processing to map these phrases to their “true” emotional meaning, drawing on patterns in survey responses and Paired’s proprietary relationship insights. The result? A translation engine that’s both uncannily accurate and playfully tongue-in-cheek.
Aly Bullock, Paired’s Head of Relationships, said: “Like Couplish itself, Paired’s new Couplish Translator comes from a place of love. We want it to help couples understand each other better, spark laughter, and keep relationships strong. AI can sometimes feel impersonal — but here, we’ve used it to make connections more personal than ever.”
The translator reveals the truth behind 10 of the most-used Couplish phrases. Top phrases identified in the survey include:
“I’m fine” — I’m totally not fine, and you should know why (53%)
“Nothing’s wrong” — Everything’s wrong (37%)
“It’s not a big deal” — It’s a huge deal, but I’m pretending to be chill (29%)
“We’ll see” — That’s a no, but I’m avoiding an argument (24%)
“I don’t care what we eat” — I care and I’ll reject every suggestion until you guess (20%)
“Can we talk later” — I need time to prepare for you to realise what you did (19%)
“Do whatever you want” — I dare you, and we’ll talk about it later (18%)
“Let’s just drop it” — This is not over, it’s going in the vault (15%)
“You didn’t have to do the dishes” — You did, but thanks for the guilt clean-up (15%)
“I just think it’s funny how…” — This is an emotional ambush (14%)
